I'm home from San Fran! I've been home since last night, actually.
This is gonna be a short post.
I've read and finished 2 books over my vacation! The first was World War Z which got off to a slow start but actually turned out to be a really fascinating book. For anyone who loves them zombies, this is a really awesome book. About how the zombie war began, how humanity was almost conquered, and how we took the world back. There are personal interviews with civilian and military survivors from countries all over the world, which really gave the reader a cohesive understanding of the hardships and atrocities of the plague.

And then the OTHER book I read, I finished almost entirely on the plane ride home. That book was a book recommended to me many a-time; Tithe by Holly Black. I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it because 1. It's in a series and thus the story isn't over and 2. the relationship between Kaye and Roiben uhhhhhhm... irks me a little.

The whole falling 'completely and utterly in love' thing without the characters barely knowing each other sort of puts me off. Yeah, you can make the argument that it's, well, a fairy tale, and that's what happens in fairy tales... but this is contemporary writing. There's nothing I love better about contemporary writing than the realness of emotions that are there. Fantastic situations with a real perspective, you know? And yes, I do love romance... But garrrrrr. I'm not even sure what entirely irks me about the whole thing. Maybe because the love is written to be so pure, but I feel that real love is acquired over a longer space of time. Like right there is just lust. Her talking about his beautiful silver hair, he talking about how unexplainable adorable she is... And sure, he loves her because she's clever and brave, and she loves him because he's some tortured soul who wants to do the right thing... But you know they both have their bad sides. They both have their bad days. I want to see Roiben's bad side (not evil, but bad) when he's NOT being controlled; like what makes him angry, what qualities in Kaye might annoy him (and what qualities in Roiben might annoy Kaye). Once they start fighting and figuring each other out and completely accepting one another can I believe what they have is really love.

I'm going to read Ironside (or should I read Valiant? It seems disconnected from their story though) and then I'll tell you what I think in the end. I do enjoy the writing and creatures very much. I actually might draw what I think Kaye looks like in her Pixie form.

Oh yeah, so much for this being short.

Hehe, I was on vacation and reading Ironside at the same time you were reading Tithe.

There are a few references in Ironside to the events in Valiant but they were quite vague and you don't need to have read Valiant to understand Ironside. I was really confused though, b/c it's been almost three years since I read Tithe and I couldn't remember anything. I think, as far as the romance is concerned, you might like Ironside a bit better. Valiant is really good too, though. Just read them all. :P

Just reading all those italicised names made me confused.
